In this season of grief following the death of the Very Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle, the Diocese of Algoma continues to hold the Cathedral of St. Luke community in prayer, alongside all who mourn his passing across the diocese and beyond.
Even in the midst of sorrow, the Church is sustained by the steady rhythms of worship, community, and shared care. As the Diocese accompanies St. Luke’s Cathedral through this time of transition, plans are in place to ensure continued pastoral leadership and support in the months ahead.
Looking toward the summer, it is with deep gratitude that we share the news that Victoria Matthews will be coming to Sault Ste. Marie to serve during the months of June, July, and August.
Bishop Matthews is widely respected across the Anglican Communion for her wisdom, warmth, and steady pastoral leadership. She has served as a diocesan bishop in both Canada and New Zealand, including as Bishop of Christchurch, where she guided the diocese through a period of profound rebuilding and renewal following the devastating earthquakes.
She is also a familiar and trusted presence within our region. Bishop Matthews has previously served at St. Michael’s and All Angels during an interregnum and was appointed Episcopal Administrator in the Diocese of Moosonee. Her experience in times of transition, coupled with her deep faith and pastoral sensitivity, will be a significant gift to the Cathedral community—and to the wider diocese—during these summer months.
In the meantime, the Cathedral of St. Luke will be supported through the spring by the ministry of Archbishop Anne Germond, along with local clergy who are assisting in leading worship and providing pastoral care.
This moment calls the Diocese to remain closely knit in prayer, compassion, and mutual support. As we continue to mourn, we also entrust ourselves to the hope we proclaim: that in Christ, we are held in life, even in the face of death.
Please continue to hold the Cathedral community, and especially Dean Jay’s family, in your prayers.
