Camp Gitchigomee Spring Update 2026

Signs of Spring at Camp Gitchigomee: Registrations Open, Work Day Planned, and Ways to Support the Season Ahead

By Jim Sutton

Though Camp Gitchigomee remains very much snowed in, there are clear signs that spring is on the way. As of April 22, the buildings appear to be in good shape, and even the wildlife has been active around the property. Local beavers, mice, and moose have all made themselves known, along with snowmobilers “playing” in the large snowdrifts in the yard. Most encouraging of all, butterflies have already been spotted in the warm places they could find.

The ice and snow on the lake are still high, and camp leaders are hoping to avoid a repeat of the very high water levels of 2022, which caused some flooding in the chapel and recreation hall.

Camping Season Registration Now Open

Registrations are now open for the three weeks of camping offered this summer, and nine rentals have already been booked. Volunteers are also recruiting staff, organizing work days, praying, and planning for the fast-approaching season.

Supporters Making a Difference

Camp funding comes through camper registration fees, parish and corporate donations, fundraising events, and generous gifts from individual supporters.

One recent gift came from John of Thunder Bay, who filled half of a large pickle jar with toonies—worth more than $1,000. His hope was simple: that children would have a great time in God’s creation.

The camp has also been blessed by a third contribution from The Salvation Army in the amount of $5,873.54, which may be used where needed, including camper registration fees.

Why Giving Matters

Every donation helps Camp Gitchigomee continue its ministry to children, youth, and families. Approximately 90% of the camp’s budget goes directly to operations such as food, fuel, bus transportation, insurance, maintenance, road upkeep, and equipment purchases. The remaining funds support essential administration, including licensing, office supplies, professional fees, advertising, and fundraising.

Your support helps ensure that young people can experience friendship, faith, and the beauty of God’s creation in a safe and welcoming place.
