Messy Church at St. Thomas Bracebridge
At St. Thomas Anglican Church in Bracebridge, Messy Church has become more than an event—it’s a ministry of hospitality. Each month, families from the wider community are welcomed to share in dinner, crafts, and stories that bring faith to life in fun and meaningful ways.
Rev. Phelan Scanlon, together with a group of dedicated volunteers, known as The Operatives, hosts these lively gatherings, combining faith exploration, creativity, and community connection in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.
“Messy Church gives families a way to belong,” said Rev. Scanlon. “It’s informal, it’s joyful, and it’s one of the most visible ways our church reaches out to the wider community.”
This year’s theme, “Names of Jesus,” is giving the team plenty to work with. “Last Friday we focused on Alpha and Omega,” said Rev. Scanlon. “Next month it will be King of Kings, and so on. The program runs monthly until the end of May.”
Finding ways to connect across ages—from toddlers to teens—is a test the team takes seriously but with good humour. “It’s a challenge to find meaningful activities and teaching when there is an age gap or two to sixteen,” said Rev. Scanlon. “We enjoy talking to the kids and getting their feedback. It can be chaotic, but at least it’s organised chaos.”
Each month brings new crafts, songs, storytelling, and—of course—the ever-popular puppet show featuring the curious Professor and the Gang, who never fail to have everyone laughing and learning together. Children rotate between craft tables while volunteers serve up a hearty meal before gathering for songs and stories that tie everything together.
St. Thomas hosts several Messy Church events throughout the year, each built around a fresh theme and always open to the community.
