Archbishop Anne Germond is among a small group of Anglican leaders from around the world invited to contribute to the 2026 Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book, Dancing to the Heartbeat of God: Stories of Discipleship.”
The book brings together reflections from approximately thirty contributors across the Anglican Communion, offering a global and deeply contextual exploration of Christian discipleship in today’s world. The volume includes a foreword and afterword by the Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally and an introduction by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.
A Canadian Contribution
Archbishop Anne is joined in the book by other Canadian contributors, including (in alphabetical order): The Rt. Rev. Annie Ittoshatt (Diocese of the Arctic), The Rt. Rev. Helen Kennedy (Diocese of Qu’Appelle), the Most Rev. Shane Parker (Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada) and the Rt. Rev. Riscylla Shaw, (Diocese of Toronto).
For her reflection, Archbishop Anne selected John 15:2, part of Jesus’ final words to his disciples at the Last Supper, centred on love, abiding in Christ, and the fruit that grows from faithful relationship. Her contribution reflects on Christian friendship as a lived expression of discipleship—one that can transcend difference and deepen mutual trust.
“What was very much on my mind and in my heart at the time of writing,” explains Archbishop Anne, “was the friendship in Christ I shared with the late Fr. Hamish Currie of Precious Blood Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie. Our friendship sought to emulate Christ, and we were able to cross the boundaries and limits imposed on us by our denominations simply because we chose the path of love.”
Her reflection is shaped by the conviction that the love to which Jesus calls his disciples is a love that overcomes difference, builds trust, and forges new relationships grounded in mutual respect.
Each contributor to Dancing to the Heartbeat of God was invited to offer a personal testimony rooted in their own context, along with a short prayer and questions for reflection—resources designed to support prayerful engagement throughout the season of Lent.
A Global Invitation to Discipleship
Dancing to the Heartbeat of God offers a confident and hopeful vision of discipleship. Through stories, prayer, and reflection, the book invites readers to listen for God’s rhythm, respond with courage, and rediscover the joy and movement of following Christ in the world today.
The book is written to encourage the Church of England and Anglicans worldwide, to reflect the breadth, diversity, and vitality of the Anglican Communion.
