This Lent, the Diocese of Algoma is partnering with Thorneloe University to offer two unique Lenten studies.

Anglican Beliefs and Practices

The first is “Anglican Beliefs and Practices”, a structured formation course designed to deepen understanding of Anglican faith, tradition, and identity.

The course will meet on Wednesday evenings, beginning Wednesday, February 25, and will continue into the spring beyond the Lenten season. Teaching will be led by the Most Rev. Anne Geromond and the Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle, with contributions from Canadian teachers of the faith. The format emphasizes theological teaching rather than devotional reflection alone, offering participants a substantive exploration of Anglican belief, practice, history, and ethos in a Canadian context.

While clergy are encouraged to participate, lay leaders are explicitly invited, and the course is not restricted to licensed ministers. The series reflects a commitment to formation for the whole Church, strengthening discipleship through theological literacy and shared learning.

This offering is a clear example of diocesan–academic collaboration, drawing on Thorneloe University’s theological resources in service of diocesan life and leadership.

Movies for Lent: Scripture, Story, and the Lenten Journey

The second opportunity is “Movies for Lent,” a seven-week, lectionary-based resource developed by the Rev. Jason Tripp, President, Thorneloe University, inviting participants to engage the Lenten journey through film, Scripture, and conversation.

The innovative series pairs each week’s lectionary readings with a carefully selected film exploring core Lenten themes such as lament, temptation, obedience, grace, revelation, redemption, and sacrifice.

The series is self-directed. Registered participants will receive weekly discussion guides, which may be used for personal reflection, small groups, or parish gatherings—whether meeting in person or online. Groups may choose to commit to the full series or engage week by week throughout Lent.

Rather than relying on explicitly religious films, the series engages respected contemporary and classic cinema, encouraging participants to reflect on faith through stories that grapple honestly with the human condition.
