Thorneloe University Convocation Celebrates New Leadership, Honours, and a Remarkable Gift to the Anne Germond Legacy Fund
The Thorneloe University community gathered on Thursday November 13 for a Convocation marked by joyful celebration, academic tradition, and deepened bonds with the Diocese of Algoma.
The evening included the installation of Rev. Jason as President and Rev. Dr. Patti Brace as Chancellor, ushering in a new chapter of leadership for the institution known affectionately as “the Haven on the Hill.”
Among the honours presented was the Honorary Doctorate of Sacred Letters bestowed upon The Ven. Harry Huskins, recognizing his longstanding dedication to the Church and to theological education.
The Mitre Award was presented to the Social Justice Committee of the Diocese of Algoma for their ongoing work and witness across the diocese. Representing the Committee, Connie Knighton of Bracebridge accepted the award and offered words of thanks on their behalf.
Archbishop Anne Germond was also recognized during the Convocation, receiving the distinction of Honorary Fellow of Thorneloe University. Reflecting on the evening, Archbishop Anne shared that the Convocation was “a time of joyful celebration and new beginnings.”
In a deeply touching moment, Thorneloe surprised Archbishop Anne with an extraordinary gift: a $20,000 contribution to the Anne Germond Legacy Fund. As she recounted, the President of the Board of Governors spoke movingly about the long and meaningful ties between Thorneloe and the Diocese of Algoma. He noted the support the university has received from Algoma bishops, clergy, and lay leaders since its earliest days, remarking that “It’s time for Thorneloe to give back.”
Archbishop Anne expressed how profoundly she was moved by the gesture:
“It brought me to tears to receive this gift on behalf of all previous bishops and chancellors and board members from our diocese.”
The evening’s celebration highlighted the enduring relationship between Thorneloe University and the Diocese of Algoma, a partnership enriched through generations of shared ministry, leadership, and faith.
